It’s Official…These Are the 67 Best Restaurants in London

If you’re a foodie, then living in or around London is truly a godsend.

As Elizabeth Auerbach, one of the most respected independent food writers and critics in the UK, has said: “To my mind, even Tokyo and New York are outdone by London. In the ‘gastro capital of the world’ stakes, London would get my vote.

But out of all of the thousands of restaurants London has to offer, which are the very best? Which ones most deserve your hard-earned money the next time you want to treat yourself to a fine dining experience?

Luckily, there is an easy way to know, through the Michelin star rating system.

The Michelin star is a ‘hallmark of fine dining quality‘ and restaurants can be awarded 0, 1, 2 or 3 stars, depending on the quality of the food.

The best restaurants of all are awarded 3 stars, and restaurants are graded purely on the basis of their food. Other factors such as interior design or service quality are NOT taken into account when awarding a Michelin star rating.

So, if you’d like to enjoy the best culinary experiences London has to offer, then read on, as our guide will tell you which of the restaurants in that fine city have received these highly prestigious awards.

Three Michelin Star Restaurants In London

The highest of the high, the best of the best, the cream of the crop…only the very, very finest restaurants receive 3 Michelin stars

1 – Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester

One of the world’s most decorated chefs, Alaine Ducasse has, over the years, earned a reputation for providing cuisine of extraordinary standard.

He has many 3 Michelin star restaurants across the world, with one of them situated in London’s The Dorchester hotel, found at the heart of Mayfair.

Serving contemporary French cuisine, Ducasse’s restaurant offers an opulent, decadent experience, with dishes like the ‘Sauté Gourmand’ which consists of lobster, truffled chicken quenelles, homemade pasta, dry aged beef and artichoke, among other ingredients.

All-encompassing luxury is the theme at this restaurant, with the tableware being custom-made by the finest manufacturers in the world. Those with the deepest pockets can even dine in the ‘Table Lumière’ which is ‘a private room surrounded by 4,500 shimmering fibre optics dropping dramatically from the ceiling and adorned with specially selected sets of Hermès china, Puiforcat silverware and Saint-Louis crystal.

Truly, this restaurant provides an experience of sheer decadence that is very difficult to forget, and even harder to beat.

2 – Restaurant Gordon Ramsey

Gordon Ramsey is one of the best-known chefs in the world.

Due to his celebrity status and high profile in the media, it can be easy to forget something which should be obvious; Ramsey is an outstanding chef.

Long before he became a household name, Gordon Ramsey worked 16 hour days, 6 days a week, for years at a time, studying under other master chefs, such as Marco Pierre White and Alain Roux.

You would think this would have taught him a thing or two.

And in fact it did, as one of his restaurants, the Restaurant Gordon Ramsey, situated in the borough of Chelsea, is one of the very few 3 Michelin star restaurants in London.

Serving ‘elegant modern French cuisine using the finest seasonal ingredients and employing both classic and modern techniques‘, the restaurant opened in 1998 as Ramsay’s first wholly-owned establishment, and by 2001, it had already earned its 3 Michelin stars – an incredible achievement in such a short space of time.

Seating 45 guests, the restaurant is an intimate venue staffed by a team of handpicked professionals who Ramsay has personally nurtured and trained over the years, until each of them has become a leading professional in their field.

Beneath the veneer of the celebrity name tag, lies a genuinely world-class dining establishment.

3 – The Araki

The Araki is a sushi restaurant of the absolute highest quality.

London’s newest 3 Michelin star restaurant, and the first Japanese restaurant in the UK to achieve this 3 star status, The Araki is owned by, and named after, its head chef, Mitsuhiro Araki.

Araki formerly lived and worked in Tokyo, where he owned another 3 Michelin star sushi restaurant, before moving to London and opening The Araki in 2014.

Within two years, The Araki had earned 2 Michelin stars, before securing its third in 2018. An incredible feat, considering that Mitsuhiro Araki had to start his new restaurant business from scratch, in an entirely new country, after moving to the UK just four years previously.

With a set menu that costs £310 per person, excluding drinks, and which features only sushi, you need to be sure that you’re a true fan of sushi before making a reservation.

For those who are, you’ll have the chance to sit at a table with Mr Araki himself and only a handful of other guests, watching a world-renowned chef demonstrate his skills, honed by decades of training, to provide you with some of the very best sushi money can buy.

You will effectively have a close-up experience with a master chef, watching him work his magic just a few feet away from you.

Put simply; if you love sushi, The Araki is the best place in London to eat, and one of the best places in the world.

Two Michelin Star Restaurants In London

Not quite top of the class, but still a dining experience of extraordinary quality, restaurants which receive 2 Michelin stars offer some of the best food you could ever hope to eat

4 – Bibendum

Bibendum is a restaurant owned by Claude Bosi, who also serves as the head chef.

Bosi is regarded as one of the UK’s best chefs, both by the Michelin guidebook, which has awarded Bibendum 2 Michelin stars, and by his contemporaries; many of whom believe Bibendum is deserving of that elusive third Michelin star.

With a culinary style heavily influenced by the classical French cuisine of his homeland, and by the traditional British catering of the land where he has lived and worked since 1998, Claude Bosi serves everything from Cornish crab, to Scottish seabass, before offering foie gras and Brittany rabbit from the other side of the English Channel.

A former student of Alain Ducasse, Bosi has become a master in his own right, and the fact that Bibendum was awarded 2 Michelin stars only a year after opening, is testament to this.

5 – CORE by Clare Smyth

Core is a restaurant of impeccable credentials.

Here is how their website describes just some of the prestigious awards they have received in recent years:

Since opening in August 2017, Core has received numerous awards including two stars as new entry in the 2019 Michelin Guide, 10/10 in the Good Food Guide, five AA rosettes, Best Restaurant at the GQ Food and Drink Awards, New Restaurant of the Year by The Craft Guild of Chefs, and the Service Award at the National Restaurant Awards.

Clare (Smyth) also received the World’s Best Female Chef Award by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.’

Impressive stuff!

A former Chef Patron at the Restaurant Gordon Ramsey, Smyth serves up a menu consisting of the finest-quality British ingredients, made into dishes from both classical and modern British cuisine.

6 – Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

Another very well-known chef, Heston Blumenthal named this restaurant ‘Dinner’ in homage to the historic British gastronomy which influenced the restaurant’s menu.

Working with food historians‘ and ‘researching 14th century cookbooks, such as those by the royal chefs of King Richard II‘ has inspired Blumenthal to create a menu that ‘takes those discoveries and fascinations of history into a new and evolving modern dining experience.’

With a kitchen pulley system ‘modelled after a version used by the royal court,’ the sense of British culinary history runs throughout every part of Dinner. This, combined with Blumenthal’s more modern, experimental tendencies as a chef, has resulted in a compelling fusion between the best parts of traditional and contemporary British cuisine.

It is a recipe which has proved successful, and popular, as the lengthy list of awards Dinner has won over recent years will testify. Of which, 2 Michelin stars is just the tip of the iceberg.

Contemporary and innovative, yet mindful of tradition‘ is a phrase which sums up Dinner very well indeed.

7 – Hélène Darroze at the Connaught

Someone else who has, in recent years, been awarded the title of World’s Best Female Chef, Hélène Darroze earned this accolade by impressing a panel of over 900 restaurant critics and top-class chefs.

Her restaurant inside The Connaught hotel is where she works her magic on a daily basis, serving food from a range of culinary styles to an impeccable standard.

Darroze crafts dishes including Bluefin Tuna, Lobster, Truffle, Foie Gras, Venison and Pigeon using ingredients of the highest quality, provided by her network of trusted, carefully chosen suppliers, who primarily reside in all corners of the United Kingdom, with some being found on the other side of the English Channel.

With an elegant, high-class interior, The Connaught offers a calm, refined and culturally-rich environment, providing a soothing refuge from the hustle and bustle of central London.

8 – Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs

A compact, intimate restaurant with just 20 seats, Kitchen Table was awarded its first Michelin star in 2014, before being awarded its second in 2018, making it a new entry in the Michelin Guidebook’s list of 2 star restaurants.

Kitchen Table is a dining experience which encourages full interaction with the chefs, and showcases previously unseen ‘kitchen theatre.

The Head Chef, James Knappett, prepares, cooks and serves a daily changing menu of meticulously sourced and foraged British ingredients.

Despite being focused mainly on contemporary British cooking, ingredients and flavours, Knappett also integrates some continental European and more traditional British influences into his cuisine, while the intimacy of the venue allows guests to ‘see Knappett and his team prepare, serve, and talk diners through‘ their culinary experience.

Perfect if you’re looking for a close-up encounter with a world-class chef!

9 – Le Gavroche

Another restaurant with a very well-known proprietor, Le Gavroche has had Michel Roux Jr. as its head chef and owner since 1991, when he took over the reins from his father, Albert.

First opening its doors in 1967, Le Gavroche was the first UK restaurant to receive 1, 2 and 3 Michelin stars, and its standards have remained extremely high and uncompromising over a long period of time, ensuring that Le Gavroche has displayed impressive longevity in remaining open for over 50 years – an outstanding achievement in the notoriously turbulent restaurant industry – while it is currently the proud holder of 2 Michelin stars, with ambitions of winning back its third.

Serving French cuisine in both classical and contemporary styles, Le Gavroche has won numerous awards for ‘French Restaurant of the Year’ and has also been named among the 50 Best Restaurants in the World by a variety of industry experts, on multiple occasions.

The fact is, if you want to experience the best quality French cuisine London has to offer, and some of the best French cuisine available anywhere in the world, then Le Gavroche is somewhere you should make plans to visit.

10 – Sketch (The Lecture Room and Library)

A restaurant which offers an environment full of colour and vitality, in addition to a menu consisting of top-class food drawn primarily from modern French cuisine, with some additional British and southern European influences, The Lecture Room and Library is a restaurant full of uniqueness and individuality, which is sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

Indeed, the luxurious, decadent and highly vibrant design of the restaurant seems almost intended to challenge its diners as to what they expect a restaurant to look and feel like.

This bold, innovative approach has paid off handsomely however, both in terms of commercial success (The Lecture Room and Library has been open for over a decade now) and critical adulation.

Here is what a columnist at The Independent had to say about their experience dining there:

‘Given the noise and flash of the Sketch experience, the food really needs to be spectacular to make any kind of impact. And it is. Under the direction of the great modernist Pierre Gagnaire, the menu reads like a collaboration between a student poet and a random ingredient generator. Each course is a tasting menu in itself, comprising three or four dishes, which riff on a theme then veer off into something extraordinary…it all added up to a rather fantastic experience.’

So, if you love French cuisine, but fancy experiencing some new twists on old traditions, in a kaleidoscopic environment which absolutely demands your attention, then there is nowhere better for you to go than Sketch’s The Lecture Room and Library.

11 – The Greenhouse

Having held Michelin star status since 2004, and being very well regarded among food critics and the local clientele, it’s no surprise that The Greenhouse is regarded as being one of London’s finest dining experiences.

Executive Chef Alex Dilling previously worked for Alain Ducasse at Adour in New York, and being in close proximity with such a master of the culinary arts has clearly taught him a few things, as he became Executive Corporate Chef for Hélène Darroze at The Connaught, before moving on to his current position at The Greenhouse.

Utilising only the finest quality ingredients, which are meticulously sourced from only the best suppliers around, menus at The Greenhouse contain foods from the culinary traditions of many different countries; with offerings including caviar, oyster, turbot, wagyu beef, duck foie gras, quince, scallop, pigeon and venison. Clearly then, excellent nutrition is assured.

With ‘specially commissioned miniature sculptures on each table, as well as in the use of natural materials such as slate, marble and wood, offset inside by the fresh green colour palette‘ The Greenhouse is one of the most peaceful, soothing and fulfilling dining experiences in the whole of the UK.

12 – The Ledbury

A former winner of ‘Young Chef of the Year’ Chef Patron Brett Graham has carried on racking up the accolades over the following years of his career, culminating in his Notting Hill restaurant, The Ledbury, receiving its second Michelin star in 2010, and maintaining it ever since.

Serving British cuisine with ingredients sourced primary from within these shores, some of the dishes available at The Ledbury include:

  • Chantilly of Oyster, Tartare of Sea Bream and Frozen English Wasabi
  • Cornish Cod, Caramelised in Aynhoe Park Honey and Radishes
  • Guinea Fowl, Chervil Root, Pear and Autumn Truffle
  • Black Figs, Goat’s Milk Caramel, Fig Leaf and Caramelised Sourdough

And, with prices for the Lunch and Dinner menus set at £125 per head for four courses, with tax and service charge included, The Ledbury is one of the more affordable multiple Michelin star restaurants in the country (and certainly within London), meaning it makes fine dining available to some people for whom such things would normally be out of reach.

13 – Umu

Umu is a Japanese restaurant where Executive Chef Yoshinori Ishii is involved in almost every aspect of the restaurant’s appearance, upkeep, food and presentation. Besides crafting the gorgeous Japanese cuisine, he also handles everything from the flower arranging to making the ceramic tableware.

It is clear then, that Umu is styled very much according to the wishes of Mr Ishii, who can be seen as the ‘auteur’, with Umu being his creation.

In cases where the restaurant functions as an expression of the Chef himself, it is important to know that the Chef in question is capable of achieving excellence. Thankfully, Mr Ishii delivers on this requirement comfortably.

Now with over 20 years of experience, Ishii trained for nine years at the three Michelin-starred restaurant Kyoto Kitcho in Japan, before becoming Head Chef at the Japanese Embassy for the United Nations in Geneva and New York. During his time in New York, Ishii ‘received the prestigious ‘Rising Star Chef’ award and was a finalist for the Vilcek prize for culinary arts‘.

Clearly then, his pedigree is assured.

The ingredients are also sure to impress, as no stone is left unturned in ensuring their quality.

Each day, Umu flies in fresh produce from Japan to ensure Yoshinori’s exacting standards, while he is in regular contact with the Cornish and Scottish fishermen to whom he has taught the humane Japanese method of fish preparation called ‘ike jime’, in order to best preserve the quality of the fish served at Umu.
