Rugby School Flight Dish Washer. How Caterquip helped to recruit another teacher!
Rugby School is a day and boarding independent school in Rugby, England. It is one of the oldest independent schools in Britain.
The school approached Caterquip and asked for our assistance to supply and install a Flight Dish Washer. This requirement was dictated by the number of diners over 3 services, 7 days a week. The school was advised a rack type dish washer wouldn’t cope with the capacity required.
The reality was the school was faced with a serious financial dilemma – they had to greatly improve capacity but wasn’t prepared for the eye watering cost of new, which we were informed stretched close to £60k! Their only alternative was to explore a professionally reconditioned solution.
What is a Flight Dish Washer?
A flight dishwasher differs from a rack style machine in that the system uses vertical fingers mounted onto a continuously travelling conveyor for operators to rapidly and evenly load dirty tableware.
These ware washers are the largest commercial dishwashers on the market and tend to be used by large institutions such as hospitals, schools, prisons, large event venues or large works canteens where hundreds of people need to be catered for at one time. A flight dishwasher system is perfect for this situation as it is incredibly efficient and can process up to 10,000 clean items per hour. Standard dish wash baskets can also be placed upon the fingers for washing glassware etc.
Like rack conveyors, they are modular systems routinely including a Pre-wash, Main wash, Rinse and Drying compartments. In short, a very comprehensive ware washing system designed for high capacity duty.
By coincidence, Caterquip had purchased a Hobart FTN Flight dish washer, which upon consultation suited the schools needs perfectly. Caterquip met with School Managers and Head of catering for the first consultation to establish and absorb the brief. We also completed a comprehensive site survey of the allocated space to confirm services and how to best fulfil use of space.

Caterquip’s head dish wash technician with his team set about stripping the machine to complete a triage for weak or borderline parts. These were duly ordered direct from Hobart. The whole system was deep cleaned, descaled, serviced, and tested to make sure all its systems, including dosing, worked as the manufacturer intended. We ran the machine continuously for 4 days to ensure it performed as desired.
Caterquip long standing relationship with Hobart UK also revealed an opportunity to invite Hobart to co-commission the machine after we installed. This is quite a boast in that we supplied a second-hand machine and the machine manufacturer were happy to assist us this way. Testament to our trusted prowess and expertise to prepare and supply such demanding machines.
In conclusion, how did we help the school to recruit another teacher?
By saving the school a fortune off their capital budget. We supplied, fitted and commissioned the flight and pass through dishwasher for just under £30k. Almost 50% reduction against a new system. The school could now redirect this money into recruitment. Since installing the machine, we had one minor snag to attend too and the school continues to operate effectively as a result.
